State Farm agent Austin Cory provided needed materials to the Chandler Fire Department for Fire Prevention Week, an annual awareness campaign that teaches fire safety within the home.

“We give back as much as we can here at my office,” he said. “It’s just one of those things that’s on my heart to give back to my community. We’re just trying to help out in any way we can.”

Every year State Farm partners with the National Fire Protection Association to provide these Fire Prevention Week toolkits to local fire departments.

With 19,000 State Farm agents throughout the nation, Cory was one out of 2500 agents chosen to donate these materials.

Those materials include fire prevention pamphlets, magnets with fire safety tips, pencils, posters, booklets, coloring books and bags to hold all the materials.

The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 4 – 10, is “Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.”

According to NFPA, cooking is the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. The leading cause of most fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.

Chandler Assistant Fire Chief Bobby Buchanan said this donation helps with the cost of Fire Prevention Week and educating children on fire safety in the kitchen.

Buchanan said they are going to make the best they can out of Fire Prevention Week even though COVID-19 has created an additional challenge for the department.

“I’m a big advocate for our first responders, our police department and our fire department,” Cory said.

Cory also donated the $300 winnings from the Baby Bale Sprint at the Chandler Rodeo to the Chandler Fire Department as well.

“They don’t get enough recognition for what they do for our communities,” he said.

“If I can help them get the recognition I believe they deserve, I’m going to do that.”
