The Davenport Bulldogs ran their record to 3-0 as they earned their first shutout of the year, defeating Alex 48-0 last week on the road.
The Class B Bulldogs start a string of four consecutive home games this Friday night hosting Strother. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
Veteran head coach John Greenfield said this week, “We played pretty well. We did in the third quarter what we should have done in the first half,” he noted, even though his squad was leading 22-0 at intermission.
Greenfield said the Bulldogs started out the game slow. He thought his team did some things it normally doesn’t do like some penalties. “I just wasn’t real pleased with how we began,” the coach commented.
“We came out in the third quarter though and played really well. We were much more aggressive.” he believes.
He said he was pleased with his defense. “We finally got the shutout we’ve been looking for and we’re getting better,” he thinks.
Greenfield pointed to “some power plays and stretch plays. Our quarterback threw a couple of passes over the heads of the Longhorns’ defenders.
Sophomore quarterback Chance Accord was 10-16 passing for 197 yards and he tossed three TD passes on the evening. He carried the ball nine times for 24 yards.
Leading the rushing attack for the Bulldogs was Colten Vanfossen as he carried the pigskin 10 times while gaining 187 yards and scoring one touchdown.
Cole Yancey rushed for 51 yards on six carries.
Receiver Casey Harelson caught two touchdown passes for 81 yards and Gage Keith snagged three receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Greenfield said of his quarterback Accord, “he’s improving each week.”
Looking to Friday night’s contest with Strother, the coach said, “They gave us a tough time last year. They’re big. Their quarterback is really big and they tested us a year ago. I’m not sure about ‘em this year.”
Greenfield said Friday night’s encounter with Strother is another nondistrict clash. He said district play begins with the sixth game of the season.
