Bound for Florida
Leo the Lion is going to the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. On June 7th, Ashlee Beatty attended the Universal Cheer Association’s cheer camp where she tried-out for All-American and was named Chandler High School’s first All-American mascot.
“It’s a very, very big deal,” Beatty said excitedly.
All-American is the highest honor a mascot can possess and is a title Beatty, who has been Leo for about a year and a half, is proud to hold. Her tryout consisted of a two-minute skit with music and props. She was judged on crowd engagement, routine, spirit and animation. She was also awarded Top Mascot, four Excellence Ribbons, the Overall Mascot Spirit Stick, the Crowd Pleaser Trophy and the Tradition Mascot Honor for reflecting what it truly means to be a mascot.
“I’ve enjoyed being able to go places and do things,” Beatty said.
This December, Beatty will travel to Orlando, Florida, as Leo, to perform alongside other All-American mascots in the 2024 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl pre-game show on January 1st. In the days leading up to the game, she and the other mascots will attend clinics to learn new techniques and prepare their routine for the pregame show as well as have a chance to visit Universal Studios.
“You are the spirit,” Beatty said, “You’re supposed to be there when there’s dead points and lift everybody’s spirits up.”
Beatty expressed that she has enjoyed her experience as Leo the Lion and takes her role seriously. She abides by the strict rules of being a mascot while in costume including always staying in character, being cheerful, never talking and never be seen taking off your costume in public.
“It can break the magic,” Beatty said about being seen by kids breaking these rules.
As Leo, Beatty has had the opportunity to cheer Chandler sports teams alongside other cheerleaders and bring energy to fans. Now, she needs her fans’ help getting to Orlando. Participants must pay their own way to get to the Citrus Bowl. Beatty plans to have a special shirt for Leo to wear on field with the logo or name of each donor.
To everyone who supports her while in and out of the costume, Beatty said, “I thank them very much and hope they continue to support.”
