The Canadian Valley Electric Cooperative (CVEC), in partnership with the Seminole American Legion, is hosting the 26th Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony and Essay Contest, according to a CVEC press release.
The ceremony is open to the public and will feature free food and refreshments. It will take place at CVEC Headquarters in Seminole on Oct. 13 and will start at 6 p.m., though there will be a pre-ceremony gathering at 5 p.m., which will have food.
As part of the ceremony, CVEC is hosting an essay contest that is open to middle and high school students within the CVEC service area or from the surrounding areas. Students may submit a one-page essay on the topic, “Why is Taps played for the raising and lowering of the American flag?”
CVEC will award two scholarships -- one for a middle school student and one for a high school student -- of $250 each, the press release said. The winner will have the chance to read their essay aloud at the ceremony.
Essays must be submitted by Sept. 22. Rules and other information on the essay contest can be found on CVEC’s website.
