Three of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members from Stroud High School attended the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Orlando from July 5-9. Two were qualified to compete, according to a press release from the high school.
Sophomore Izzy Greene and freshman Lorah Brackeen competed as a team in the Repurpose and Redesign Level 2 Competition, with their project to transform discarded plastic animal feed bags into stylist bags and purses. They place 14th overall in the nation.
The final member of the delegation, Isla Arballo, volunteered to work at the competition and assisted with the Teach and Train category.
The three also attended workshops, business meetings, a fashion show highlighting designs by FCCLA members and networking events. They were also able to go to Universal Studios and Aqua Glow waterpark.
“This was an experience that wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the support of our Stroud School, administration and school board. Thank you,” said SHS FCCLA Adviser Dulayna Murray.
Oklahoma FCCLA sent its largest delegation to date at over 500. Among those, 74 were Top 10 qualifiers, 15 were National Champions, nine were national runners-up and 12 finished third, according to the press release.
“I am incredibly proud of Oklahoma FCCLA and the amazing year we had”, said FCCLA State Adviser Brittani Phillips. “Our delegation showed the rest of the nation that the Oklahoma FCCLA standard is alive and well. Our name was called for numerous awards, our delegation was the most spirited, and it made everyone extremely proud to be from Oklahoma.”
Additionally, Oklahoma had two Skill Demonstration Event National Champions, three Skill Demonstration national third-place winners, two Challenge Test National Champions, and one Challenge Test National thirdplace winner.
The state group broke records in membership this year, having over 24,000 members. Vice President of Membership, Maddie Mueller, of Colbert High School, accepted the membership increase award on behalf of the state delegation, the press release said.
