A Wellston firefighter lost his life on Monday evening, following a grass fire that destroyed over 200 acres.
Wellston Fire Chief Todd Beesley released a press statement on Tuesday announcing the death of Joe Flake.
According to the statement, Flake joined the department four months ago after retiring from a career as a truck driver.
“Joe wanted to continue serving by giving back to his community. He applied to join the department, successfully completed the same testing process required of every recruit, and earned his place on our roster,” Beesley said.
Flake was assisting crews at a large grass fire on Monday when he experienced a medical emergency. He was transported to the hosptial, where he passed away later that evening.
Beesley said the Wellston Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to Flake’s family and loved ones, adding that their thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. He said they are ready to support them in any way needed.
“We are grateful for Joe’s service, his willingness to answer the call, and his commitment to serving his neighbors. His service and dedication will not be forgotten,” he said.
