Town Talk volunteers and the American Legion Auxiliary are hosting an “Olive Garden” luncheon this Sunday, February 5th at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center. All profits from this event will go towards the balance on our Bugle Boy statue. Diners will receive salad, lasagna, breadsticks, dessert and drink for a $20 donation. Children 5th grade and younger will receive a free spaghetti lunch. It is important that you purchase your ticket in advance so we know how much food to order. Those with a ticket will be served first and guaranteed a delicious lunch. We will serve lunch from noon until 2:30 p.m. or until we run out. You may purchase tickets by calling me at 918-527-9833 or contacting any Auxiliary or Town Talk member. Due to weather conditions we have not gotten tickets delivered to Stroud Dry Cleaning (Shelly Dunn) or Unique Market (Andrea Thompson) but hopefully will by today (Thursday). Come join us Sunday for a delicious meal and some community fellowship. Ciao!
Have you visited the Stroud Public Library recently? Thanks to the Friends of the Library there are several new puzzles in the children’s section. These days when it’s too cold to play outside, the library is a nice outing for the kiddos. Marsha and Lisa are there to help you with all your library needs.
My dear friend and community supporter, Steve Bivin, recently received a special award from Lions District Governor Derek McCubbens in honor of his outstanding attendance record in the Lions organization. Steve is a member of the Davenport Lions Club. He was also recently sworn in as Vice-Commander for the Stroud American Legion Post #257. Congratulations to Steve on these two honors.
There will be a county-wide election on February 14th. At this time we will be voting whether to renew our one-cent sales tax for another five years. Also on the ballot will be our School Board election. We have two candidates on the ballot: J. P. Morris and incumbent Shane Niccum. Please head to the polls and exercise your right to vote. State Representative Kevin Wallace has stated that only 23% of registered voters in Oklahoma get out to vote. Let’s show our appreciation for the privilege for which our veterans have fought.
Life-long Stroud resident, Stroud alum and beloved local hair stylist Janelle Kinnamon took a nasty fall this past week and broke her jaw and wrist. This was before the ice hit so it shows us how dangerous falling can be even when there is no ice. I realized that after falling down the inside staircase at my mom’s. Town Talk wishes Janelle a speedy recovery. There may be many women running around town with their hair all in a frazzle but please don’t say anything. They are just waiting on their hair stylist to heal.
I’m not on the streets too much in the evenings during the winter months but I did notice new string lights at Sonic Drive-In. I love them and they really make the place look festive. To me, you just can’t have too many string lights around town. It makes our community look alive.
The residents of Prairie Pointe have been partying their socks off with recent birthday celebrations. Agnes Baker recently celebrated her 99th birthday, James Green his 96th and Margie Testerman her 90th. Town Talk wishes each of them a year full of love and good health.
Upcoming activities for the community include Hospital Development Authority meeting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, February 2nd. This is also Groundhog Day so let’s hope that Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t see his shadow. The Stroud Industrial Authority will meet at City Hall at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7th, the Oklahoma Blood Institute will hold a blood drive on Wednesday, February 8th at the Chandler Wal-Mart from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. and City Council will meet next Thursday, February 9th at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall.
This may not be our last stretch of ice and snow so if you found yourself at home this week without an ice scraper, snow shovel, de-icer or extra flashlights, I’m sure you can purchase those at several of our local retailers. It never hurts to be prepared. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. You’d better try to stay out of the dog house and pick up some flowers and a box of candy from our local retailers, also. Stay warm and have a great week. Thank you for choosing to shop and dine local…………………….first!
