At the lake

This is a good time of the year to go to the lake like we did this past weekend and my wife Pat and I took our seven-year-old grandson Liam down there with us. It wasn’t the best weather, as it rained quite a bit. It turned off windy and for the most part and was cool, not cold, but cool.

But we got down there early enough on Friday afternoon where we could enjoy some time riding around in our golf cart and spending time outside. The rainy weather actually didn’t move in until later Saturday morning.

At this time of the year, there is not the crowd at the lake like there is during the summer and up through Labor Day weekend.

Where we are is quiet with few people around us. Once school returns from the summer break, the large numbers of people disappear for the most part.

Liam was on fall break and we had been telling him we would take him with us down there. He was all about going and excited when we drove to Norman to pick him up a little after noon on Friday.

His dad Terry told us he had been ready to go since early that morning.

We like it because it’s a time to relax, visit, there are no deadlines and we can do what we want where and when we choose to do it.

I do a lot of thinking when we are there because it gives me an opportunity to reflect on how my early life was, how it changed as I became an adult and what has taken place over the last 40 or more years.

Another reason I enjoy fall is what takes place during this time of year.

We got up early Saturday morning, Pat and I enjoyed our coffee and then the three of us headed off to Checotah to have breakfast. After we ate, I went across the street to a small bakery and picked up some donuts knowing it might be cold and rainy according to the forecast for Sunday morning.

Liam’s all about donuts.

We arrived back at our trailer later Saturday morning after breakfast in time before the rain started falling. Pat and Liam worked with Liam’s Lego set and made a couple of different things, while I just rested and watched a little football.

The rain didn’t stop until late afternoon. But once it did, Liam was anxious to get outside and go in the golf cart.

It was pretty muddy, but he didn’t care. So Pat and I took turns going with him as he drove the cart some.

We took him to eat an early supper at a little restaurant not far from our trailer, then got back in time so he could in the cart again. A few hours later a thunderstorm moved in with heavy rain but it lasted less than an hour.

Come Sunday morning we got up and had our coffee, then the three of us enjoyed our donuts before we got ready and headed back home.

As I said, this is a great time of year, especially to enjoy the outdoors, even if it is a little rainy.
