Town Talk

A big thank you to all Town Talk volunteers who volunteered to work the Stroud Route 66 Visitor’s and Tourism office during the Wine Festival.

Those volunteering were Bryan and Mary Vickery, Julie Bivin, Linda Waller and Thelma Mauldin. Judy Ann Melson, who lives in Kendrick, joined Thelma on her shift.

We love it when our Kendrick neighbors join us. My dear friend, Lavina Hinman, was on standby just in case I needed her.

It’s wonderful to have a community of people willing to help whenever needed.

We are still looking for volunteers to help us water our beautiful flowers on Main Street. Bryan and Mary Vickery are watering on Sundays, Aleta Smalley and I are watering on Tuesdays, Julie Bivin and Linda Waller are watering on Thursdays and Cathy Terry and Andrea Flatt are watering on Saturdays.

Raphe Thompson is always willing to step in and help Cathy and Andrea when one of them is busy. With these 90-degree temperatures our flowers need to be checked daily, so that means we are still needing help on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If you have time to volunteer for this project, please do.

It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community. You may pick the time of day you water so it fits your schedule.

John Stobaugh has been busy leveling the lot for the mini-golf course. Mike Settle helped us out with a great buy on rock that he removed from another job site. Getting the shed that will be used for our club house moved from Bartlesville to Stroud has had its fair share of obstacles.

I hope by the time you read this article we will have successfully moved it and begun work on the renovations. To quote my mother who I’m sure stole this from someone else, “Inch by inch anything’s a cinch!”

As I was reading last week’s paper, I noticed in the article “Stroud Preparing for Summer Fest 2021” that the newest addition to the pavilion was the construction of bathrooms by the City of Stroud.

The article listed the sources of the building funds but failed to mention that Town Talk raised $8,000 toward this project.

The fund raising was kicked off with a $1000 donation from Stroud alums Mr. and Mrs. Ken Davidson who now reside in Yukon, OK.

We received other donations from in-town supporters as well as former “Stroudites.”. Much of the monies we raised came from the sale of the American flag flowerpots. Thank you again to everyone who purchased one.

I just want readers of this column to be aware of the correction so that you know the money you gave for that project went directly towards that project.

Town Talk is fastidious about accountability of the many donations you make to us. We want you to know that your money goes directly to the project you designate.

In case you didn’t know, our restrooms are air-conditioned.

If you haven’t ventured downtown lately, you have missed out on seeing the new businesses on and off Main Street. The sno-cone trailer is back in town on the property which houses Twice the Ice, Ruby’s is going strong on the corner of Main and 5th Avenue, The Treasure Box has moved across and up the street to the old Salt Creek building, the Cue & Brew is under new ownership and will soon be known as the Lazy J Saloon (Henry Starr’s Watering Hole) and what was once The Show now houses a new business called Route 66 Anything & Everything.

On 4th Avenue on the north side of Main is where the new barber shop will be opening, and Kyle Anderson occupies the rest of that building with a store full of furniture and home décor that he sells mainly through on-line purchases.

He has also used his space for several local events. Lots is happening downtown, so you’d better come see it all. While checking out the new businesses, take time to stop into our long-standing businesses, OJ’s Plants & Petals, Stroud Drug & Gifts, Welcome Home, True Value, Unique OK, Patton’s Produce and the Estate Barn.

You could spend a whole afternoon in town checking out our local merchants right after having lunch at one of our many great restaurants. Have a great week and remember it’s your choice so choose to shop local…………………first!
