Town Talk

The American Legion Auxiliary will be putting flags on veteran’s graves at the cemetery on Thursday, May 23rd at 9:00 a.m. If you are available, come out and volunteer. We have close to eight hundred flags that need to be placed at graves. This is a great activity for families and a way to teach the next generation one of the ways they can say “thank you” to those who have defended our freedoms.

The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m. at the Stroud Cemetery. Memorial Day is not a celebration but a somber holiday set aside to pay homage to those soldiers who did not come home.

It is our responsibility as Americans, especially on this day, to set aside time to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. I hope to see many community members at the cemetery on Monday.

The Stroud Public Library will hold a book sale May 24th and 25th. There will be books for all ages and the cost is three books for $1. There are also movies and Great Courses on DVD for sale. A local history display will be available featuring the Class of 1974. I graduated with the Class of 1974. It’s shocking to realize I am old enough to be considered “history.” Thanks to Marsha Morgan and Lisa Hoover for this display. Classmates, stop by and take a peek.

Stroud Alumni Weekend has arrived! There is a HORSE basketball tournament at the Memorial Gym at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23rd, and a co-ed softball tournament at Stroud High School Field at 6:00 p.m. on Friday May 24th. It saddens me to say that once again Stroud has to say “until we meet again” to some of our friends. Another one of our beloved veterans has died. Earnest Redford passed away at his home surrounded by his family on May 8, 2024. He was born in Stroud but spent his younger years in Kansas. After serving eight years in the Navy, he returned to Stroud with his wife and made this his home.

He was the son of Harold and Bobbie (Hudson) Redford and is survived by Kathy, his wife of 53 years. Ramona Raffety passed away on May 24th, 2024. She attended and graduated from Kendrick High School. Ramona worked various jobs in the Stroud School Cafeteria, and she retired after 36 years as the manager. She touched the lives of many children during her tenure. Her three children, Janice Edwards, Nancy Smart and Bobby Raffety are all Stroud graduates. Ramona’s service will be Thursday, May 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at Stroud Christian Church. Town Talk offers its condolences to the Redford and Raffety families.

It’s a busy weekend in Stroud. We will have visitors in our community for Memorial Day and alums coming home to celebrate with their classmates. Let’s work extra hard to make sure our community looks clean and polished to show everyone we are Stroud Proud.

Have a great weekend and thank you for continuing to shop local………………first!
