It’s obvious that use of cell phones has become an integral part of the lives of people today and has been for many years.
As I look around, I’m sometimes amazed of how cell phones have just consumed some people.
It’s disturbing to see how many people are so rude, though, with their use of cell phones.
It’s like nobody or anything else around them exists.
There is one business that used to have a sign indicating it would not wait on the customer until he or she finished talking on the cell phone. That owner made it quite clear there would be no transaction until the phone call was completed.
I agree with that business owner. She had the right idea. I wish there were more like her.
If my phone rings when I am about to pay for gas, or conduct business at a store, if I even pick up my phone I simply tell that person I will call back.
My wife and I were in her car last Sunday morning and we pulled up to a pump to get gas. There was another vehicle at the pump ahead of us but not far enough ahead where the hose would stretch.
The driver in the car ahead wasn’t even trying to start to get gas, although his gas cap was off. He was consumed with a cell phone call and paid no attention to our being behind him.
After about five minutes waiting, Pat and I backed up. We needed to run back by the house for a minute which we did and then we came back to fill up at that same location.
Fortunately, the rude driver ahead of us several minutes prior was gone.
On Monday evening this week, as I and several others were waiting on school board members who were in executive session, I listened to them talk about some of their cell phone experiences with kids.
I shared our experience from the previous day. Listening to them, they discussed of how mesmerized kids are today and how parents allow them to have cell phones.
One said parents just give their child a phone to keep the kid occupied. Another talked about how her daughter wanted a phone so she could use it to communicate with others and the woman let her know that wasn’t going to be.
Another talked about how some kids form clicks, how hateful they are towards those they don’t like and how they use it for bullying.
Cell phones aren’t going away, but the parents like those I visited with the other night for sure have the right idea.
It would be nice if there were a lot more like them.
