The joys of grandparenthood

My wife Pat and I had our little grandson Liam this past weekend. We went and picked him up Saturday morning and we had him until late Sunday afternoon when we took him home.

Even though Pat and I were pretty worn out by the time we get back Sunday evening, it was a good tired.

It’s always worth it because of the time we got to spend with him.

Liam calls Pat “Gigi” and I’m Mike, not granddad Mike, just Mike, which is really okay.

Not all grandparents have the opportunity to be with their grandchild or grandchildren very often.

It had been more than a month that Liam had spent the night with us.

We had a July 4 celebration here at the house and he’s at the age where he could begin to enjoy it. He really had a fun time we think, and he got to hold a sparkler in his hand with the help of his dad for the first time.

He kept running the fireworks out to where his dad Terry, my brother-inlaw Randy and our niece’s husband C.J. were setting them off.

He’ll turn 4 later this month.

Pat and I were recalling when he was born and this past weekend were talking about how fast the time seems to have passed already. Just in a month it seemed like he had grown so much.

From the time we got him back to our house on Saturday until we headed back on Sunday afternoon, he and we were busy.

Liam got to drive his little car we got him for Christmas, we took several rides in the golf cart, he loves our old blue pickup truck and we took rides in it and took him out to eat a couple of times.

We even took him to the mall and bought some new clothes for him, with him picking out a new toy, something he does most every time he spends a night or two with us.

He was so excited about his new toy and clothes, he carried the sack to the car. He could hardly wait to get back to our house.

As soon as were inside, he opened the sack and grabbed his new Hot Wheels toy out of it. My wife helped him get it out of the box and he played with it much of the afternoon.

When it came time to take him back home Sunday, we picked up Pat’s mom Ruth for the ride back to his house.

She’s Liam’s great grandmother.

Our daughter Meghan had fixed Sunday dinner for all us when we got him home. We enjoyed our time visiting with her, watching little Liam and husband Terry, who was working, dropped by for a few minutes to see us.

What a busy but enjoyable weekend. We are so Blessed.
