Town Talk

Things are moving along on the miniature golf course. We had problems with rain leaks, but David Evans and Charlie Webb think they figured out how to fix them. Keep your fingers crossed that the building is dry after our next rain. Town Talk has ordered the sign for the course and hope to have it installed in a couple of weeks. The grand opening is still scheduled for Memorial Day/Alumni weekend.

It looks like a new business will be opening in what was previously the Okie Steak House/Corridor Magazine building. I don’t have any details except for the sign in the window that reads, “Computer/Phone Repair – Opening Soon.” That building has been vacant for quite some time. It will be nice to see some activity there.

Across the street is a Stroud business that has recently had a makeover. What was once Kathy’s Thrift Store is now Okie Tom’s. It is no longer a thrift store but is a surplus outlet. Their inventory has changed quite a bit so if you haven’t visited the store lately you need to make a point to stop by and check it out.

I turned 66 years of age last Friday and my husband, Larry Reed, threw me a surprise birthday party on Thursday evening in Stroud since we are located on the Mother Road. I was led blindfolded into the party by two of my great-nephews, August and Lincoln. I would never have thought those two could keep such a secret. Of course, Gideon was on hand to yell “surprise.” The public was invited, and I want to say thank you to everyone who attended. Thank you, too, to all of you who couldn’t attend but sent your regrets and birthday wishes. Larry enlisted the help of my Stroud friends to help with the planning and he couldn’t have picked a better crew. Party planners extraordinaire consisted of Cathy Terry, Andrea Thompson, Julie Bivin and Clara Hodgens. Other helpers included Thelma Mauldin, Jo Braden, Vivian Henshaw and David Evans. The theme was, of course, a 66-themed party and it was carried out to a tee. A delicious Italian Cream cake was baked by Shannon Palmer and gorgeous cookies were prepared by Halle Mae’s.

The party planners carried the Route 66 theme out from the water bottles to the photo op area of cut-out vintage cars. We are now encouraging them to go into the party planning business. These ladies know how to put on an event!

I attended a Route 66 Centennial Commission meeting this past Tuesday. We are currently meeting on a quarterly basis. I will fill you in next week as to what new developments have taken place as we work towards the celebration.

No fooling, there will be no school on Friday, April 1st. Some of the activities for the week of April 4th are Retired Educators Association meeting at 11:30 a.m. in Prague at Ken’s Pizza, Band Boosters meeting at 6 p.m., American Legion Auxiliary meeting at 6:00 p.m., and American Legion meeting at 6:30 p.m. all on Monday, April 4th and Stroud Arts will meet on Wednesday, April 6th at 5 p.m.

Tomorrow begins a new month, April. I always like beginnings because I try to set new goals for myself. They are usually just the same goals I set last month but didn’t keep. This month let’s all commit to supporting our local businesses and shop local………………….. first! Have a great week!
