Town Talk

Just three weeks until the Andrew Sisters Tribute Show comes to Stroud. The American Legion Auxiliary and Town Talk volunteers are hosting the show at the American Legion building on Saturday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. All American Legion members will be admitted free of charge and all other veterans and active service members will be admitted at no cost, too, with a military ID or by wearing their service hat to the show. The public will receive a general admission ticket for a $20 donation with proceeds going to pay for the completion of the Bugle Boy statue which will stand at our veteran’s memorial in Ed. Smalley Centennial Park. A special thanks to RCB Bank (Linda Smith) and BancFirst (Carol Pearman) for sponsoring this event as a thank you to our veterans. Senior citizens needing transportation to and from the show should call me at 918-527-9833 to schedule a ride.

Putt Putt Kicks on Route 66 is currently open during the afternoons for the fall season. If you want to play and we are not open, you may call me at 918-527-9833 and we will be happy to open for you. A big thank you to our most faithful customers, Mason, Sam and Megan McCammon. They play the course regularly and enjoy a Johnny Freeze at the clubhouse after their round. Our hours vary with the availability of volunteers, but we are always willing to open to meet your schedule.

My former teacher and life-long friend, Thelma Mauldin, celebrated her 95th birthday this past week. Her son Alan and his wife Michelle rented a 12-passenger van and drove up from Texas with three of Thelma’s granddaughters and their husbands to help her celebrate. Also making the trip were her three young great-grandchildren, which was the icing on her cake. She will have another great-grandbaby this spring, bringing the grand total to four. Thelma has been a resident of Stroud since her four adult children were just kids. Her husband, the late Dr. Art Mauldin, was a Stroud doctor and I hear many people say he was the doctor who delivered them so his legacy lives on. After Dr. Mauldin’s death, Thelma began teaching in the Stroud school system and retired after a long and successful tenure teaching everything from history to psychology and the gifted and talented program. To know Thelma is to love her and Town Talk sends her belated birthday wishes.

I saw a post on Facebook this week that said to remember Newnam’s Feed and Supply had lots of nice gifts available as you begin your holiday shopping. That’s one of the reasons it’s important for us to take the time to visit our local merchants because they carry so much more than what the sign on their business might tell us. Because we are a small town our businesses need and try to be as diverse as possible to meet our needs. You might not expect to find gifts at a feed store, purses at a drug store, unique soda pop at a hardware store, ice cream at a flower and gift shop or canned salsa at a garden shop but I just want to remind you, our local businesses are trying to meet the needs of our local community. That’s why it’s important for us to remember to shop local………………first! Have a great week and check out all your hometown has to offer.
