Bulldogs fall to Yale, 46-0

The injury-riddled Davenport Bulldogs lost to Yale 46-0 last Friday night and now turn their attention to a homecoming clash with SW Covenant.

Coach John Greenfield said homecoming is at 6:45 p.m. with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs dropped to 0-4 on the season and Greenfield said, “We played atrocious. We didn’t get any better last week, we took a step backwards.”

Yale jumped out to a first quarter 6-0 lead and added another 14 points for a 20-0 margin at intermission.

Davenport gave up another 20 points in the third period. “We actually got into the fourth quarter,” Greenfield noted, as Yale closed it out with its final score.

“We threw a bunch of interceptions,” he said.

He stated that Aydan Stancell suffered a knee injury. “That’s another freshman who has played a bunch. “I’d say he’s out for this week,” he added.

Greenfield said freshman quarterback Chace Buchanan was out again in the Yale contest and might get him back for Friday night but he wasn’t sure.

Pointing to injuries, the veteran Hall of Fame coach said, “I’ve never had this problem with this many injuries at one time. Travis James hasn’t been able to play this season yet. He’s a sophomore but has a bad back and is still not ready to go.”

He pointed to Tyler Gilkerson who is in a thumb cast still and won’t be able to play this week, but may be able to in a couple of weeks.

Greenfield lamented, “We just couldn’t do anything. It wasn’t one of our better showings,” he continued.

Sophomore signal caller Colt Metcalf struggled against Yale, completing only four passes of 22 attempts. He was the leading rusher for Davenport with 30 yards. The Bulldogs managed only 33 rushing yards to go with 20 through the air for a total of 53 in the contest.

Jackson Lane had 11 yards receiving and Aidan Elmore eight.

Dez Finney and Riley Ethridge each had six solo tackles and Elmore had four.
