Davenport’s Bulldogs won their second district game of the season last week, knocking off the Summit Christian Eagles 32-12 on the road.
They stay on the road again this week traveling to once-beaten Weleetka for a Friday night contest. Davenport Head Coach John Greenfield said kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
Davenport is 2-0 in district and 5-2 on the season. Against Summit Christian, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead. The Eagles scored a touchdown in the third quarter and again in the fourth before Davenport put eight more points on the board late in the final period.
Greenfield said Colton Vanfossen had a good game against the Eagles. “He gets in open field and he’s pretty good. He’s been steady for us all year,” the coach noted.
Quarterback Gage Keith also had a good game, the coach thought and has been all year.
“Our execution wasn’t as good overall as it could have been,” Greenfield said. “We turned the ball over a couple of times,” he added.
The coach commented that “they (the Eagles) changed up their defense since when we saw them play earlier in the season. They were better this week than when we previously saw them.”
Looking ahead to Friday night, Greenfield thinks “Weleetka’s really good. They’ve only lost to Quinton I think.”
He expects Weleetka mostly to run, noting he figures this week’s opponent to utilize a couple of brothers who will switch off at quarterback and running back. “The younger of the two also plays tight end some,” Greenfi eld said.
Davenport will get back this week Colby Britton who has missed the last two games due to an injury. “That will give us some depth at running back and at outside linebacker,” the coach said.
