Fatal collision on turnpike

A Missouri woman died and another woman was injured in a traffic collision involving three vehicles early Tuesday on the Turner Turnpike west of Stroud, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

State Trooper Shayne Ballard of the Traffic Homicide Division identified the woman who died as Melissa Mitchell, 41, of

Aldrich, Mo. He said she was pronounced dead on the scene by Stroud EMS.

She was a passenger in a 2015 Freightliner driven by Sandra Bennett, 62, of Republic, Mo. Bennett was transported by Stroud EMS to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where she was admitted in fair condition with trunk, internal and arm injuries, Ballard reported.

The trooper said Mitchell was pinned in the ve hicle.

Ballard said the other vehicles involved were a Ford F-450 that was unoccupied and disabled in the roadway and a 2012 Peterbilt that was unoccupied and legally parked on the outside shoulder.

He said the collision occurred about 4:15 a.m. in the eastbound lane near mile marker 175, three miles west of Stroud in Lincoln County.

Ballard said the cause of the collision is still under investigation.

He reported seat belts were equipped in all vehicles and in use by the driver of the Freightliner but not in use by the victim.

The OHP closed eastbound lanes of the turnpike at 4:15 a.m. and they were not reopened until nearly four hours later at 8:10 a.m.

The westbound lane was reopened around 8:45.
