Oklahoma voters overwhelmingly defeated State Question 820 during Tuesday’s special election, that would have legalized recreational use of marijuana for persons 21 or over.
With 1,745 of 1,982 precincts reporting about 9 p.m., which is more than 88 percent of the precincts statewide, the no votes were leading 303,362 to 180,709.
Marijuana use and possession also remain crimes under federal law.
Lincoln County voters soundly defeated the measure with 4,388 or 71.64 percent voting against it while only 1,737 or 28.36 percent voted in favor.
Pottawatomie County voters also were against SQ 820, rejecting it 6,977 no 3,725 for it.
Wellston voters approved an OG&E franchise election that will allow the utility company to sell electricity in the town another 25 years.
According to the ballot, excise tax revenues would have funded implementation of the law with any surplus revenues going to public school programs to address substance abuse and improve student retention (30 percent), General Revenue Fund (30 percent), drug addiction treatment programs (20 percent), courts (10 percent) and local governments (10 percent).
