Town Talk

Town Talk Table Trivia is back, by popular demand! Join us Wednesday, April 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the American Legion building for a night of fun and trivial information. Game Master Larry tells me the first-round categories will be science and nature, entertainment, history, geography, sports and arts and literature. Just giving you a heads up so you have time to brush up on those categories. In the double-round he will be using his own categories and you just never know what those might be. He’s keeping those under lock and key and won’t even share this top-secret information with me. Questions are answered by a team, not individually, so we assure you no egos will be bruised in this activity.

The American Legion Auxiliary had their first Facebook Live Bake Sale last Wednesday evening and it was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. We sold out of everything and have already had requests to host another one. We do plan on having a second one just to use all the skills we learned from this one. This was a new experience for us but we will know better what to do next time. Let us know if you have a special item you’d like to see on the auction block and we will see if one of our chefs can whip that up for the next auction.

Tickets are still available for the knife raffle sponsored by the American Legion and Auxiliary. The drawing will be held May 1st at the monthly American Legion meeting. Tickets are $5 and are available at True Value, Stroud Dry Cleaning, Newnam’s Feed & Supply, Unique Market and Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts. You may also call Legion Commander Mike Horwath at (254)338-3418 or Auxiliary President Diana Reed at 918-527-9833. The knife is beautiful and was handmade by veteran and Bristow Legion member Vane Bell and the leather sheath was handmade by his brother. The snaps on the sheath have the Seal of Oklahoma on them. This knife will be a treasure for the person lucky enough to win it.

The house sitting on the lot on the east side of the Rock Café and has been torn down and the lot cleared. It was the home of the late Mamie Mayfield who ran the Rock for many years. I have many fond memories of Mamie and her home and even though it was nostalgic to see it gone, it is exciting to see what owner Dawn Welch will put in its place. Dawn was asking for suggestions on Facebook from the community as to what we would like to see or what we think Stroud needed on that corner. If you have any ideas, message Dawn on Facebook or stop by the café and tell them your ideas.

Stroud lost one of its beloved citizens this week, Mr. Jim Davis. He died on Saturday evening. Jim was a talented pianist and played for community events and weddings. He was a member of the American Legion and First Baptist Church. When he played at our church, he turned our hymns into glorious productions. He even played at one of our Shop Local nights. When my parents had the restaurant at the Best Western, he would entertain on various holidays, such as Valentine’s Day. My cousin, Ron Baker, stated that the thing that amazed him about Jim was how he would play for a couple of hours and never repeat a song. Jim was married to Stroud High School graduate Wynn (Cissy) Bland, and they have resided in Stroud for many years. Town Talk sends its condolences to Sissy and her family. Jim’s talent as well as his kindness will be missed in our community.

Spring has sprung and we are starting to experience warmer weather. My husband stated he doesn’t ever remember the grass being so green this early. He also stated he doesn’t have a very good memory. LOL I heard someone say they weren’t planting their garden until May 1st this year because last year they had to plant their garden twice due to the late cold weather. Whether you’re planting now or waiting, we have many merchants in town ready to meet your vegetable and flower garden needs. Thank you for choosing to shop local……………..first!
