Town Talk

He has arrived!

Stroud’s very own Bugle Boy is proudly standing on Main Street in Ed. Smalley Centennial Park watching over our Veteran’s Memorial. The sound system for him to play taps and reveille is not in place yet but that is our next step and we have begun work on this last step of Town Talk’s latest project.

Thank you to everyone who supported this project from AVEM’s corporate donation to our several thousand-dollar donors, five-hundred-dollar donors and every other amount in between.

Every dollar bill, five-dollar bill, ten-dollar bill and beyond went into making this dream for our community a reality. Thanks, also, to Central Rural Electric Cooperative for their Community Foundation grant donation. It has definitely been a labor of love.

We are grateful for the support of each person – young and old, local residents and alums far and near. Town Talk thanks you from the bottom of our hearts. We think this is something that we as a community can be very proud of and once again shows the pride we take in honoring our veterans. Drive downtown and see what you think. We are definitely Stroud Proud!

Thank you to everyone who attended Town Talk Table Trivia night last week. Those attending were Marsha Morgan, David Evans, Jo Braden, Bruce Miller, Aleta Smalley, Thelma Mauldin and Jeanette and Steve Massey. We had nine players, so we divided into two teams.

It turned out to be the Trivia Faithfuls against the Trivia Teachers and the teachers took home the trophy. Trivia Master Larry had some interesting questions for us to ponder. For the first round he used trivial pursuit categories but for the second round he changed it up a bit.

Categories included U.S. Constitution, Movies by Tag Lines, Product Slogans, Fun with Flags, Criminals and The Only President Who……… We laughed a lot, learned some new trivial facts and even learned we knew more than we thought we did. Watch this column and Stroud Happenings and Functions Facebook page to see the date for our next trivia night. Come try it out – unleash your inner genius with a team of what will become your new best friends.

Have you marked your calendars yet for June 3rd? Will Rogers is coming to town to entertain us with his wit and rope tricks. We are busy working out all the details for this evening of entertainment, but I will keep you posted right here in the Stroud American. Tickets will be available May 1st.

Activities for this week are slim according to the Community Calendar on Facebook. There may be events that have not been submitted to the calendar so you might check out the digital sign on Main Street to see what is listed there.

I do know that Stroud Community Clothing Ministry is open Thursday, April 27th from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on West Highway 66.

Town Talk, American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion members continue to sell raffle tickets on a chance to win a beautiful handmade knife created by Bristow Legion member Vane Bell and his brother. Tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased at Stroud Dry Cleaning, True Value, Unique Market, Newnam’s Equipment & Automotive and Newnam’s Feed and Supply.

You may also contact Legion Commander Mike Horwath at 254-338-3418 or me, Diana Smalley Reed at 918-527-9833. The drawing will be held on May 1st.

Thank you to our volunteer firefighters who assisted with the house fire in Milfay this past week. I know this was traumatic for these men and our hearts go out to them. This is such a tragedy for the Murray and Grammer families and for our entire community.

Our hearts are broken but we have come together as a community to do what we can to help, Thank you to everyone who is donating to assist in the only way we know how. Town Talk sends its deepest condolences to everyone affected by this terrible situation.

This is our last week in April so May is upon us. It is a busy month with Mother’s Day, graduations, alumni weekend and Memorial Day.

Our local merchants can meet your needs for any occasion. Stop by and check in with them when you’re looking for that special gift. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, ask them and maybe it can be ordered for you. Brownie, store manager at Williams Foods, makes sure her Coca-Cola distributor leaves Caffeine Free Diet Coke on the shelves for me.

I think there is someone else in town enjoying this same beverage because I must get there fast, or they are all gone. I guess I’m not the only one who has to avoid caffeine if I want a good night’s sleep. Since May is such a busy month full of activities there is not much time after work to get dinner on the table so just stop by one of our many restaurants and dine in or carry out – it’s your choice and you won’t feel rushed to make it to your event on time. Have a great week and thank you for continuing to shop local……………first!
