Steve Brant’s Route 66 Spirit of America Museum is officially open for business on Main Street, Stroud. The Stroud Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new business this past Saturday. Stop in and see this amazing museum – view a phone booth like the one Clark Kent used to transform himself into Superman, visit the Daily Planet and check out the Star Wars exhibit. There’s all this and so much more! The Tulsa World had a great article about the museum so that means our community also received some publicity. Thanks to Steve for bringing this museum to Stroud. Please visit and show your support.
Another Fire Truck Muster and Wine Tasting event is in the books. Thanks to the Chamber and everyone for their hard work in making this event happen. I spoke with several merchants who said they were bustling with business too, so it was a great day in Stroud.
My mom ran into Stroud alum Becky Brashears Messec the other day at Unique Market and had a nice visit with her. Becky currently resides in Pauls Valley with her husband. Mom always enjoys a chance to visit with former students. Becky is the daughter of the late Pete Brashears and Beverly Brashears-Sanders. Her brother is the late Paul Brashears. Paul was a friend of my brother Gary and there was nothing funnier than Paul telling a story unless it was Gary impersonating Paul telling a story! Andrea Flatt Thompson and Joy Jackson-Smith just returned from Palms Springs, California where they enjoyed spending time with their former classmate Pam Miller Xitco. It’s so much fun reuniting and spending time with life-long friends.
I forgot to mention that the winners of May’s Town Talk Team Trivia night were the amazing team of Marsha Morgan, Jim Hodgens and David Evans. They were our smallest team, so it just goes to prove that smart things come in small packages. Bruce Miller is in the doghouse though (or maybe I should say horse house) because he was a no-show after we changed our start time so we could be assured he had time to give his horses their evening meal before coming to trivia. If you see him, please let him know we are looking for him!
Activities for the week include Route 66 Metal Detecting Club 7:00 p.m. at City Hall on Thursday June 15th and Father’s Day on Sunday June 18th. It’s a quiet week in Stroud but be sure to check out the Pavilion digital sign to see if there are any additional activities.
Former Stroud American Legion Commander and long-time Legion member Jean Barrett died last week at the age of 93 years. His memorial service was held this past Monday at Stroud United Methodist Church. Town Talk sends condolences to his friends and family. It is because of veterans like Jean that we continue to enjoy the freedoms that come with being an American.
Town Talk is still selling bricks ($65) for the Veteran’s Memorial at Ed. Smalley Centennial Park and veteran’s banners ($125) for our downtown light poles. Call me at 918-527-9833 to purchase either or both items.
The Bugle Boy sound system is hopefully going to be in place soon. We have received a cost estimate and are busy trying to secure the needed funds for the purchase. We are keeping our fingers crossed that it won’t be long.
Putt-Putt Kicks on Route 66 is open for the summer. Our current hours are Thursday through Sunday evenings from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with us taking our last golfers at 8:30 p.m. Corn hole, horseshoes and other games are also available and ice-cold Johnny Freezes are in the freezer and ready to sell at $4.00. They make the summer heat somewhat bearable.
Soccer is coming back to Stroud. The Stroud Soccer Club is hosting a Youth Soccer Clinic on July 1st at the old high school baseball field. It is available to boys and girls 3-10 years of age. U4 to U6 will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and U8 to U10 will be from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. This is a free clinic.
It’s summertime in Stroud and our merchants are ready and willing to meet your summertime needs. Maybe you should consider buying a new umbrella to either keep you dry from the rain or cool from the sun. You just never know from day to day about this Oklahoma weather.
Have a great week and thank you for continuing to shop local……………first!
