The Bugle Boy will soon be blowing his horn to honor our veterans. The sound system should be in place in time to pay homage to our veterans on Veteran’s Day. Reveille and taps are two of the songs that he will play. Town Talk is pleased to complete this project for our community. Thanks to all who supported us in this endeavor with your donations.
The American Legion Auxiliary will also honor our veterans on Veteran’s Day with a concert by a tribute group, The Andrew Sisters. Veterans and their spouses will be admitted free of charge, but the general public may attend for a donation of $20. Funds donated from this event will go towards purchasing wreaths for Wreaths Across Stroud on December 16th. We will purchase wreaths to be placed on each veteran’s grave at Stroud Cemetery. The concert will begin with a cookies and punch reception at 6:30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Mike and Shelly Dunn recently hosted visitors from Stroud, New South Wales, Australia. The Dunn’s became friends with Rodney and Kylie Gorton in 2011 when they were traveling the United States with their two sons.
The two couples have stayed in touch ever since. They have even met in Las Vegas and Houston over the years. While in town the Gortons visited Marsha Morgan at the Stroud Library.
They are involved with their historical society, so they wanted to visit Stroud’s history. They also visited all three schools, Spirit of America Museum, Sac & Fox Cultural Center, attended an elementary school softball game and a City Council meeting.
They dined at local restaurants D’s Specialty House and Ruby’s and had coffee at our Main Street coffee shop. The Gortons also spent a couple of days with Arthur and Betty Thompson.
Stroud’s own Elizabeth Wilson is also a friend, and they spent a couple of days with her in OKC before coming to Stroud.
She took them to the Oklahoma City Memorial and Devon Tower. While in Stroud they stopped in and visited Elizabeth’s dad, Chris Wilson.
Last time they were in Stroud they dined at the Rock Café and visited the High School Coliseum which was new at the time.
When the Dunns and Gortons became acquainted Shelly Dunn was involved with the brick and rolling pin contest and knew a little bit about the Gorton’s hometown.
Even though the brick and rolling pin contest has not taken place in many years, friendships that were made during that time remain.
Those were fun times in Stroud and many of us have lots of fond memories of our annual Brick & Rolling Pin Contest.

Town Talk lost a dear friend and avid supporter this week. Ann Rogers passed away on Monday, October 2nd at her home in Stroud. Ann was an active member of First Baptist Church and a long-time volunteer at the Stroud Clothing Ministry. She was a wonderful grandmother and spent lots of time babysitting her grandkids.
Until recently when she began having some health issues, Ann attended or donated to any and every event Town Talk sponsored.
She, along with her dear friend Juanita Evans, were loyal supporters of ours and we will miss her dearly. Our condolences go out to her daughter, Karen Dervin, and her entire family and many friends.
Brenda Vickrey Place, 1968 Stroud High School graduate, also died this week. She was currently residing in Texas. Brenda was the daughter of Ray and Katherine Vickrey, life-long Stroud residents, and a sister to Larry, Anita and twin sister Linda.
All of the Vickrey kids graduated from Stroud High School. Town Talk offers our condolences to the Vickrey family.
We are looking forward to having the additional bricks engraved at our Veteran’s Memorial. Town Talk is currently getting everyone to approve their brick from the template sent to us.
As soon as we get approval on all bricks the engraving will begin. We hope to have them all finished by Veteran’s Day.
I met a three-year-old boy this week at the miniature golf course. He was wearing the cutest t-shirt and on it, along with pictures, it said “shop local.”
The “shop local” mantra is even reaching the younger generation.
That’s the way to change things – start early. Let’s follow his example.
Thanks to all of you who continue to shop and dine local………………………..first!
