Town Talk

Watching the World Series this year is extra special because former Chandler High School athletic standout Jon Gray is pitching for the Texas Rangers against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

While a student at Chandler Jon played baseball, basketball and football. His senior year he focused on baseball. Jon played in the minor leagues from 2013-2015. He made his major league debut with the Colorado Rockies in August of 2015. He played for the Rockies until 2021 at which time he became a free agent.

In December of 2021 Jon signed a four-year contract with the Texas Rangers. Lincoln County has many things to be proud of and Jon Gray is someone we can add to the list.

The American Legion Auxiliary continues to raise monies to place a wreath on every veteran’s grave on

Wreaths Across Stroud Day on Saturday, December 16th. We have close to 800 veterans buried at our cemetery and the goal is for each veteran to have a wreath placed on their grave.

A twenty-four-inch wreath with a red bow costs $10. They are asking for minimum $20 donations that will allow them to purchase two wreaths/bows. It is a huge undertaking for the organization, and they need your help. The wreaths will be picked up after Christmas and stored to use again next year.

Checks may be made out the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) and mailed to Cindy Mason at 426 South 10th Avenue Stroud, OK 74079. Please help the Auxiliary honor our veterans this Christmas.

I just returned from Alexandria, Indiana where I attended one of my great-nephew’s second birthday party. His name is Stetson Edgar Smalley and is the son of my nephew Casey.

We had a great time and one thing I love about road trips, second to spending time with family, is traveling through other small towns. This time I had a great time seeing all the sights in Casey, Illinois, population 2,376. I visited their downtown area and spent some time visiting with their librarians. It is a town smaller than Stroud but also has great things happening in their community.

I left with lots of ideas I hope to share with our City Manager Bob Pearman and our City Council. I’ll also share some of them with you in next week’s column. Check back here next week and get the scoop.

Don’t forget the Milfay Community Craft Show which will be held at the old school building in Milfay on November 4th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Admission is free and concessions will be provided by the Community Center (breakfast and lunch). You may rent a booth for $30. If you are interested contact Peggy at 918-261-1495.
