The Davenport football season has ended, as the Bulldogs dropped their first round playoff contest to Drumright 62-12.
The Bulldogs finish the season with a 2-9 overall record.
Coach John Greenfield said this week, “We’ve made some mistakes, but we had a lot better effort. We extended the game longer and we scored some points,” he noted.
“We extended the game into the third quarter. Still, we had some blunders, like hiking the ball over the head of the quarterback, but that can be fixed,” he stated.
He thinks Drumright may be one of the two best teams the Bulldogs faced this year, the other one being Oklahoma Bible Academy who they fell 54-8 to in the season opener.
“They’re right there with OBA,” he stressed.
The veteran head mentor, who was inducted into the Hall of fame earlier this year, said, “They’re some things we can build on for next year. We were young and inexperienced this year.
“We’ll show a lot of improvement next year,” Greenfield believes.
He also pointed to some key injuries throughout the season the Bulldogs suffered.
He said that sophomore quarterback Colt Metcalf didn’t even play last year and he became the chief signal caller when freshman QB Chace Buchanan went down with a season-ending injury earlier in the season.
“We’re looking forward to next year. We’re going to put this season to bed and look forward to 2024,” the coach added.
Davenport amassed 176 yards passing but were minus one yard rushing.
Metcalf threw for one touchdown, a 10-yard pass to Aidan Elmore and he ran 19 yards for another.
Jackson Lane led Davenport receivers with 106 yards, Riley Ethridge had 25, Elmore 19 and Wyatt Simon had 17.
Ethridge had four solo tackles while Aydan Stancell, Ethan Boggs and Tyler Gilkison each had two assists.
The Bulldogs trailed at half time 4812 before the Tornadoes finished it off with a pair of touchdowns in the third period.
