You can definitely tell its winter in Oklahoma. Due to the cold temperatures and icy conditions Stroud schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday and many businesses had to close or adjust their “open” hours. Many people were asking about school closings on Facebook. It was recommended that you download the Stroud Schools application (app) on your phone and then you would receive notifications as they became available. I took advantage of this and put the app on my phone. Not only can you check on school closings, but the school calendar is also available and much more information. Take advantage of this tool and you can stay up to date with all school information.
Stroud resident and former Main Street business owner Rick Craig passed away on Friday, January 19th. Before moving to Stroud, Rick retired from Valley Printing in Ceres, California. He manned the counter at Sisters Consignment for a number of years and was a prominent figure on Main Street before retiring once again. Rick was active in the community and served two years as Stroud’s Chamber of Commerce president. He was Stroud’s local Santa Claus for many years and greeted children after the Christmas parade. His memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Stroud on Friday, January 26th at 11:00 a.m. Town Talk offers its condolences to Rick’s wife, Phyllis, and their entire family.
Stroud’s second grade basketball team played an exciting ballgame this past Saturday against Bethel. The Tigers took home the win by scoring the winning shot in the last minutes of the game, beating Bethel by one point. The word on the street is that Bethel hadn’t lost a game in two years, so it was quite a win for our Tigers.
There are no activities listed on the Facebook community calendar for this week except the clothing ministry is open today, Thursday January 25th, from 9:00 a.m. until noon on West Highway 66. I’m sure their opening will depend on the weather.
Things, I’m sure, have been slow this week for our businesses and restaurants due to the weather. January is always a slow month, and this weather doesn’t help that situation. As soon as the weather permits, let’s get out and support our local businesses. Thanks for continuing to shop and dine local……………………… first!
