Town Talk

One of our Main Street businesses would like to add some local products to their product line-up. If you have or know of anyone who has locally made foods such as honey, salsa, jam, etc., please contact Michelle Whitson at the Treasure Box.

Things are taking shape at buildings that were once home to RCB Bank and Mazzio’s.

Two new businesses will be opening with both offering food options, but I will let you know more details as they become available. It’s always exciting to see empty buildings being put to good use.

For all of you who ordered bricks at the Veteran’s Memorial, we have not forgotten you. It has been a little bit more of an ordeal than we anticipated but all the kinks have now been worked out.

I should have a date soon and will keep you posted on when the engraving will take place.

The Stroud Alumni Association held its first planning meeting this past Sunday for the 2024 alumni celebration. The date for the festivities will be May 25th.

The traditional events will take place with the Open House kicking off the day hosted by the Class of 1984, alumni parade in the afternoon, alumni banquet Saturday evening and after-banquet party at Route 66 Pavilion on Main Street.

I graduated with the class of 1974, and we will be celebrating our 50-year reunion so information will be forth-coming to all ’74 graduates.

Please keep Dr. Markert and LaDonna in your prayers. He has spent the last couple of weeks in the hospital and is hoping to come home soon. He is so loved by the people of our community.

My husband Larry and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary this month. A lot has changed over 25 years. As I reflected on my wedding day, I thought about dear friends who had participated in my special day.

My pastor, Burl Mackey officiated the ceremony along with life-long friends Bill Brown assisting him and Hazel Standridge reading poetry.

All three of them are now deceased and I wish they were here to celebrate with me. I received wedding gifts from my third-grade teacher Kitty Watson, my principal Blue Gaither and my superintendent’s wife Louissa Wright.

It was so special to be remembered by these friends 23 years after I graduated high school. Just another reason I love our hometown. I jokingly told my husband last year that he could count on me to “stick around” at least another year because I wanted to see what a great gift he got me for being married 25 years. He told me he thought the traditional wedding gift for that many years was “Styrofoam.” I had a good laugh after that comment.

Well, I was at exercise class on Monday, and I was visiting with another exercise enthusiast like me (lol) and told her I really liked her workout shoes.

She told me they were a little expensive but were so comfortable and that the soles were made from, would you believe, Styrofoam. Maybe the last laugh will be on Larry, as he thought he was getting off so cheaply but now I’ve found an expensive pair of Styrofoam workout shoes.

Valentine’s Day is February 14th. It’s not too early to start shopping for that special gift for that special someone. Our merchants have their stores stocked and are ready to help you stay out of the “doghouse.” Also, you’d better check with our local restaurants owners to see who is taking reservations for dinner and get on the list. Have a great week and thank you for choosing to shop and dine local………….first!
