Davenport’s Bulldogs came so close to winning its first game of the season last week, but fell to Alex 2827, after being on the Longhorns’ one-yard line late in the game.
The Bulldogs must now get ready in a hurry as they host Depew in a Thursday night contest. Davenport Coach John Greenfield said a shortage of officials caused the schedule change to Thursday evening.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog stadium, he said. “We had a 14-point lead and couldn’t hold on,” the veteran head coach noted.
“We were down on their one-yard line with a sevenpoint lead and didn’t score. I should have opted to kick a field go. We have a kid who can kick those this year,” he said.
He said after his Bulldogs failed to score, Alex took it from there on a trick play all the way down the field and then got a two-point conversion to win.
Davenport, 0-3, will seek its first win against Depew which is also winless at 0-4. But Depew has played some decent teams, Greenfield stated.
“We’re playing just good enough to lose,” the coach lamented. “They (Alex) capitalized on things and we didn’t.”
The coach believes his squad continues to get better but mistakes are beating them. “We had another touchdown called back because of a blocking in the back penalty. That TD would have sealed the win,” he’s convinced.
“We have to learn to put people away, to close out teams. But we’re making too many mistakes,” he thinks. “Even if we could have kicked that field goal we would have won,” he believes.
