Driving down Main Street it was sad to see the former flower shop’s sign had been taken down. It’s been a long time since Stroud has been without a flower shop. Over my lifetime many have come and gone – from Parker’s to Bettina’s and from Leona’s to OJ’s and others along the way. Stroud has been fortunate to have wonderful flower shops. We will all miss having this local convenience.
Congratulations to my dear friends Berry and Shirley McCammon on recently celebrating fifty years of marriage. I think they must be like Leon and Vivian Henshaw. They must have tied the knot at the school carnival. I graduated with Shirley, and I know she can’t be old enough to have been married fifty years since our high school graduation. On a serious note, it’s a wonderful legacy to leave their children and grandchildren. Town Talk wishes them another happy fifty years, I apologize but I gave you some misinformation in last week’s paper. I told you new playground equipment would be installed at Parkview Elementary School over Spring Break. That was not correct. The new equipment will be installed during summer vacation and be ready for the kids when they return in August. It’s coming, just not quite yet.
The Stroud Alumni Association was notified that William Harvey “Bill” Pickering passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Bill graduated with the Class of 1960 and currently resided in Midland, Texas. His brother, CJ Pickering Class of 1958, has been a big supporter of Stroud’s Town Talk projects. We offer our condolences to his three daughters and the entire Pickering family. The Alumni Facebook page will post Bill’s obituary when it becomes available.
Make plans now to attend the Kendrick Alumni Parade happening this summer on Saturday, June 7th, 2025. There will be a junior fire muster immediately following the parade. For more information on activities that will take place call Patty from 8:00 a.m. until noon or leave a message at 918-368-2219.
The Stroud Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Festival will also be held in June on the 14th beginning at 10:00 a.m. There will be all kinds of activities taking place on Main Street Route 66. Food trucks, a car show and games for the kids are just a few of the many things they have planned. Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss this event.
Congratulations to award recipients at this year’s Chamber of Commerce banquet. Darrell Kee was chosen as Citizen of the Year, Debbie Garrett for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Dee Baker for the Mickey Gaines Memorial Mentoring Award and Five Star BBQ & Steakhouse Award, Dee Baker for the Mickey Gaines Memorial Mentoring Award and Five Star BBQ & Steakhouse for Business of the Year.
Recent baseball news included a Middle School baseball game against Depew on the Thursday before Spring Break. The Tigers secured the win from the Hornets with a score of 10-0. They took on the Okemah Panthers this past Monday night and will be competing in the Wellston Tournament this week Thursday, March 27th through Saturday March 29th. The OK Naturals hosted a Perfect Game Tournament in Stroud this past weekend. The Naturals went down in defeat to the Mayhem 9U team after their pool games but put up a fight to try and pull off the win. Stroud players on the team are August and Lincoln Smalley, Kanon Hilbert, and Greyson Hubbard. The Naturals will be off this weekend.
March is winding down and hopefully with it is this Oklahoma wind that keeps sweeping down the plains. Let’s hope as March goes out like a lion, April will come in like a lamb and we can get outside and get some work done in our flowerbeds and yards. Nowhere better than Stroud, OK to get your lawn and garden supplies. Thank you for continuing to shop local…………. first!
