Davenport 36, Yale 30

Davenport’s Bulldogs, led by the rushing attack of Brody Robinson and the air assault of Chase Mitchell, claimed a 36-30 contest over Yale last Friday night.

Head coach Grant Powell said afterwards, “Last year that team beat us 49-0. It felt good to avenge that loss.

“Our kids gave relentless effort all night to avenge that loss,” he noted.

He said in the first quarter, “We ran 23 plays to their two. And for the game we ran a total of 76 plays for 575 yards while they only had 37 for 374 yards,” he added.

The coach pointed out their game plan was to keep the ball on offense as much as they could.

Powell gave a shout out to his offense line who he says is always outsized. “They just continue to get better each week,” he believes.

Powell said his Bulldogs recovered two onside kicks, adding “We stopped them three times on fourth downs.”

The coach pointed to the game clincher. Yale had fourth down on the Bulldogs’ 16 yard line with 22 seconds left in the contest. Defensive end Jeb Kalka knocked down a pass at the line of scrimmage to seal the win, Powell stressed.

Robinson rushed the ball 30 times and gained 238 yards on the ground while scoring three touchdowns and caught a TD pass as well.

Robinson also had 17 total tackles, seven of those unassisted.

Devin Murfin had a dozen tackles, nine of which were unassisted.

On offense, Mitchell led the way completing 14 of 24 passes for 241 yards through the air and two TDs. Mitchell also ran the ball for 41 yards on 12 carries.

Tyler Gilkison had four receptions for 109 yards that included a TD.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a road game Friday night to open district play at Cherokee. Powell said kickoff is at 7 p.m.

“Their quarterback makes them go,” Powell said,
