The Chandler and Wellson Fire Departments responded to Turner Turnpike to help rescue a motorist on Friday night.
A press release from Wellston Fire Chief Todd Beesley said a motorist exited his vehicle at mile marker 160 westbound and fell about 30 to 40 feet into a drainage area. Both departments were called out, and the Oklahoma City Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team from Station 6 was also requested by Chandler to assist.
The man was successfully removed and taken by air for medical care, the release said.
“Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of fire departments working together,” Chief Beesley said. “The Turnpike can be extremely challenging for firefighters, often presenting unique and dangerous situations. We want to remind all drivers to stay alert, move over, and slow down for emergency crews, tow operators, and construction workers. Your awareness helps keep everyone safe.”
Wellston has a fully volunteer fire department and often responds to calls on the turnpike, as well as hundreds of calls across Wellston and the surrounding rural area. To help fund the department, they are hosting a community fundraiser on Nov. 8 at The Butcher BBQ Stand from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be live music, a BBQ dinner, raffles and a live and silent auction.
The proceeds will help the department purchase lifesaving equipment, protective gear and updated communication tools.
“Our firefighters are dedicated community members who answer the call to serve day or night,” said Fire Chief Todd Beesley. “This fundraiser helps ensure we have the tools and equipment needed to protect our community.”
