Things are happening at the Skyliner Motel. If you haven’t driven by lately, you need to take a look. There is a new buggy on display outside the front of the motel. I’m sure there’s some interesting history associated with it.
A big Town Talk thank you to American Legion Commander Mike Horwath for painting the wall on the west side of the building this past week.
Mike is also the Director of Quality Control for Mint Turbines here in Stroud.
Thank you to David Evans, Cathy Terry and Jim Hodgens for coming out for Town Talk’s “block party” last Wednesday night.
We worked on grass on the sidewalk and in the street and it looked much better. We tried spraying this time with Roundup 365 which is supposed to kill the weeds for a year.
We are watching to see if it is effective because up to this point we have had to redo the areas we previously worked on. There is no clean up “block party” this week but we’ll schedule another one soon.
Town Talk is currently working on an awning to cover the playground equipment in Foster Park.
We are not sure this is going to happen right now but are securing bids. We have a possible donor for this project. We are getting all our ducks in a row and keeping our fingers crossed that we can make this happen.
Another project I am looking into is a bugle boy for Ed. Smalley Centennial Park.
The bugle boy would be a six foot statue that plays revelry every morning and taps every evening. It would be a great way to honor our veterans and give Stroud another unique stop for tourists.
Pete Sawatzky is allowing Town Talk to do a project on the wall on the west end of his Main Street properties. It would be on the west wall of the building that years ago housed Parker’s Flower Shop.
Keep your eye on this project and watch that wall being transformed.
Town Talk appreciates all the volunteers who faithfully water our Main Street flowerpots each week.
We have enough pots that it has turned into quite a job. Volunteers helping me are Julie Bivin, Linda Waller, Mary Hendrickson, Juanita Evans, Cathy Terry, Andrea Thompson, Aleta Smalley and the Girl Scouts. Judy Bukowski is available when needed.
Thanks again to Main Street Family Clinic for donating the water wagon for us.
Sure makes the job a lot easier and faster. When you live in a small town everyone feels like family and when they hurt, you hurt.
I want to send out “get well” wishes to my dear friends, Judy Palmer, Juanita Evans and Vivian Henshaw. Judy was having some heart issues and got a pacemaker, Juanita has been under the weather for a few weeks and Vivian just had knee replacement surgery.
All are on the mend so that is good news.
A former classmate of mine, Doug Castleberry, passed away this past week so the Castleberry family has been on my heart.
Etta and her husband, the late Charles Castleberry, raised their children, Charla, Linda, Gerry, Doug and Alan in the Stroud area and have been a part of our community for years.
Doug left Stroud when he was in grade school and attended school in Davenport but I can see him like it was yesterday.
It’s hard to believe that this is the last paper for August.
As Parker Sneed says on his sign board at the Pawn Shop, “Time flies.” It says a bit more than that so drive by and read it. I always enjoy Parker’s witticisms.
September is around the corner and I see many merchants are beginning to get ready for the fall season. Stop by and see what they have to offer.
As always, remember to shop and dine local……………first.
