Kellyville’s Ponies shut out Meeker in the second half and turned a twotouchdown lead into a 60- 26 thumping in the district opener for both teams.
The loss puts Meeker at 2-2 going into Friday night’s rivalry match with Prague.
Kellyville stands at 4-0 and in a district tie with Jones and Chandler. All have 1-0 league records.
“We didn’t play very well, especially defensively,” said Meeker head coach D.J. Howell.
“We were shorthanded defensively and didn’t play very well, and that combination was enough for us not to have a shot.”
Meeker led briefly in the first quarter, after the first of Caden Wolford’s four touchdowns and trailed by six points -26-20 - with a little more than five minutes to go in the first half.
After that, it was all Kellyville except for Wolford’s final touchdown, which made it 42-26.
“Everything we saw was stuff that we were aware of and knew was coming,” Howell said. “Still, you have to get lined up and play technique well. At times we had people in the right place and didn’t make the tackle.
“We didn’t win a lot of 1-on-1 battles. We have to be better, as an entire football team.”
Wolford ran 26 times for 148 yards and four scores, while Meeker had 280 yards as a team.
The Bulldogs completed eight passes in 19 attempts, with sophomore Ty Gabbert completing seven of those for 65 yards.
Keaven Grady had had four of the receptions, good for 62 yards.
On defense, Zach Cook had eight tackles in his first action since being injured in the Bulldogs’ second game. J.J. Blooner had seven tackles and one sack,
Now, it’s on to Prague, where the Bulldogs will face a 3-0 Red Devils team.
“We’ve watched a lot of film on those guys,” Howell said. “They do a lot of good things, offensively.
“They require you to be disciplined, to line up and communicate. You have to have responsibilities you carry out on each play.
“We’ll have our hands full and we’ll have to prove that we can do this.
“Prague feels good about themselves. They’re 3-0 and we’ll have a lot to prove to ourselves.”
