Town Talk had another successful block party, accomplishing more “sprucing up” on Main Street. Thank you to Mayor Tommy Smith, Jim Hodgens and Town Talk volunteer David Evans for coming out to work. Heather Black sent her
Heather Black sent her regrets due to some health issues but said she’d make sure her Main Street corner was “spruced up” the next morning when it was a little cooler.
We have received lots of comments about how great Main Street is looking.
I received a call from Lonnie Blaylock, Class of 1959, last week who had a question about his Stroud American subscription. Lonnie currently resides in Central California but said he returns to Stroud usually once a year on Memorial Day weekend.
We reminisced a little and I asked him what his parent’s occupations were when he was growing up here. He said his mom worked for Howard Johnson’s and at one time his dad owned a Texaco station at the corner of Highway 66 and 99.
Lonnie grew up with two younger brothers, Larry Blaylock, Class of 1961, and the late Tommie Blaylock, Class of 1965. Answering the phone for the paper has been such a fun experience. I get to talk to Stroud alums from all over the United States who continue to receive their hometown newspaper.
Town Talk hopes to complete fundraising efforts for the Main Street Pavilion restrooms very soon. Thanks to everyone who has made a donation or purchased a flowerpot to help with this project.
We received our latest donation from Lavina Hinman so she gets a big Town Talk “shout out” and thank you! We are now just $1,300 shy of the $10,000 needed.
If you would like to donate please send a check to Diana Reed at 301 West 6th Street, Stroud, OK and make your check out to City of Stroud. You may also contact me by calling 918-527-9833. We can take your donation by PayPal, Venmo or CashApp. We are trying to make this easy for you. (LOL)
Town Talk is proud of all the things it has accomplished with your help and support for our community. Just a reminder of what we have contributed back to Stroud are an updated sign at Stroud turnpike exit, Jelly Bean playground mulch and three spring animals at Foster Park, Main Street digital sign, downtown decorative flowerpots, American Legion renovation (new front doors, flooring, stove, refrigerator, etc.), street lamp bases, fall scarecrows for downtown lamp posts, Pause and Refresh dog watering stations, patriotic chairs for swimming pool, lights for gazebo in Ed Smalley Centennial Park and Main Street Pavilion, additional benches/chairs for Main Street, park and cemetery and soon to be built public restrooms at Main Street Pavilion.
Activities we have sponsored are hosting Farmer’s Markets, facilitated ice cream business, placing and picking up flags at cemetery for Memorial Day, Memorial Day ceremony, ”Spruce Up” block parties for Main Street, watering and maintaining downtown flowerpots and sponsored alumni dance the last two years.
None of this could have been accomplished without the support of our loyal alums and interested Stroud citizens. Thanks for helping us make our hometown the best it can be.
Have I told you lately what great restaurants we have right here in Stroud or what nice local shops and services we have locally?
If not, let this be a reminder to always shop and dine locally……………….first!
