During Fire Prevention week last week, Stroud firefighters dressed up in their gear and headed into Parkview Elementary to teach student important lessons regarding fire safety.

“They’re always excited when we’re there,” Stroud Fire Chief Chris Wilson said. “It was a real good time.”

Parkview Elementary Principal Brenda Gooch said students learn different things to expect if there is a fire and see what a fully dressed firefighter looks like so they are not scared in the event of a fire.

“This is so they could experience what we would look like if we were to come into their house, show them what we sound like,” Wilson said.

Gooch said they also receive materials that all students have access to. Those materials include pencils, stickers, hats and books on fire safety procedures based on their grade level.

Wilson said they request donations in order to purchase the literature that is given to the school.

Stroud State Farm agent Kent Clovis has been donating to this program for over 45 years.

“I’ve contributed to their program every year since I’ve been an agent,” he said.

Clovis said this is the first year they’ve been able to provide the materials through StateFarm.

“It’s a great program,” he said. “They provide a really good education program with the students.”

Clovis said his kids and grandkids have gone through the program and said it teaches important fire safety procedures.

Wilson wanted to remind everyone to check fire alarms since it’s the time of year when it starts to get cold.
