Easter Sunday was a great day with the family. We even had the grandson Liam spend a night with us over the weekend.

My wife Pat had gone over Friday afternoon to be with our daughter Meghan in Norman and she brought him him back with her early Friday evening.

Liam seems to also have fun when he’s at Mike’s and Gigi’s house. He can go to Gigi’s pantry because he knows exactly where she keeps his favorite snacks.

We had him one night and until about noon Saturday, then Pat took him back over and she stayed again with him and Meghan coming home Saturday night.

We of course had donuts for breakfast on Saturday morning. That’s pretty well become traditional when Liam spends the night anymore.

Because the weather was rainy and cold Saturday morning we just stayed in and Liam pretty well occupied himself and us with his toys and things.

On Sunday, after going to church, I picked up some breakfast for Pat and me. She had already started on the big Sunday dinner she was preparing for when Meghan, husband Terry and Liam were arriving later that afternoon.

She had told me she was fixing what she called a “Granny dinner.” That was the type of dinner that her late mom Ruth used to fix when she was still able to cook Easter dinner for the family.

That included a ham, messy potatoes, a jello dish with marshmallows on top, green beans with bacon, deviled eggs, black and green olives and dinner rolls. Meghan brought dessert, a chocolate cake.

Many of those items Ruth used to fix were among Meghan’s favorites.

Before we sat down to eat dinner, I said a prayer like I always do but I reflected and remembered the reason for that day, paying respect to Our Lord. I think that is so important that we not lose sight of the reason we were gathering that day.

Needless to say after eating dinner we were “stuffed,” and we had to wait for several hours to have our dessert.

Pat had picked up some fairly large, colorful plastic Easter eggs earlier in the week so on Sunday before they arrived Pat and filled those with a mixture of money and chocolate candy.

Not too long after dinner, Terry went out and hid those in our large backyard for Liam to hunt and shortly after he did that we all gathered on the patio to watch Liam hunt the eggs. Terry did a great job of hiding them.

Liam finally found all of them, though it took a few hints from Terry and us for him to gather them all up. Then we watched him open the eggs. Most had a little money in them along with candy, a few with just candy, and he liked the ones with money or money and candy the best.

Later, we all sat down and had dessert. It’s such a pleasure having the entire family around Easter and that made the weekend really special.
