This year’s Trick or Treat night around our place showed that people are becoming more comfortable with these kinds of activities.
I was glad to see that. My wife Pat and I weren’t sure what to expect. But the weather was really nice, it was a clear sky, hardly any wind and it was on a Saturday night in the Shawnee area.
Tecumseh had theirs on Friday night the 29th and in the metro they were celebrating it on the actual Oct. 31 Halloween date.
They weren’t flocking to our front door by any means. They were though, at least out and about.
Of course, we bought too much candy, but then that’s really kind of normal for us.
That was a considerable contrast to a year ago. I think last year we literally had maybe a handful at the most.
Of course, there still weren’t any vaccines in place yet at this time in 2020, though they were getting close.
Last year’s Trick or Treat night and related activities were basically non-existent a year ago in most areas around here.
Also, if you will think back, many areas throughout Oklahoma, including Lincoln and Pottawatomie Counties had just experienced an unusual, powerful ice storm in late October.
Thousands of people were still recovering and picking up from it and many people in some areas in the state were still without power.
The storm hit on Monday and Tuesday of that week. I honestly don’t ever remember having an ice storm before Halloween when I was growing up.
But there were no worries about the weather this year. It was picture perfect as I mentioned earlier and couldn’t have been much better for this time of year.
She and I also were talking about how much we enjoyed going trick or treating as kids when we were growing up.
When I was a kid, even as I neared being a teenager, the kids I ran around with at that time, we all looked forward to Trick or Treat night. Despite even the coldest October night, or even if it was drizzling or just slightly raining, we bundled up and had a good time.
The bunch I grew up with looked forward to getting the candy and goodies. Even those handing out the candy and goodies, like my parents, enjoyed it as well.
We didn’t have daylight savings time in those days. So, we began right at dark and normally we were finished by 8 or so. We just had a good time.
I remember one time I dressed up as an injured football player, another time as a young hunter I think.
It was all about having a good time with our friends.
