The Davenport Bulldogs suffered their first district loss of the season last week, losing to Weleetka 48-8 in a road contest.
Davenport is now 2-1 in the district and 5-3 overall for the season.
Coach John Greenfield said next up is Wetumka which comes to Davenport Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Bulldog Stadium.
Greenfield said about the loss to Weleetka, “We played pretty well except the last two minutes of the first half. They scored twice in the last two minutes of the second quarter,” he noted.
“They were big and just a better football team. They had some speed too,” he said.
The coach pointed out, “We scored first, made it 8-0. They tied it up. Then we missed some opportunities in the first half to score.
“They pretty well owned the second half,” Greenfield said.
“But our kids never gave up and they played hard the entire game,” he added.
Greenfield commented, “We may have lost two kids to injury last week, we’re not sure yet. A lineman broke his hand and the other, a wide receiver, dinged up a knee. We’re not sure about either one of them, and won’t know until later in the week,” he said.
Looking ahead to Wetumka, Greenfield believes, “They’re pretty good. They have a couple of brothers who play quarterback and running back and they also have some size.” Game statistics: Colton VanFossen, 146 rushing yards on 19 carries, 1 rushing TD, 4 fumbles, 7 (1,6) Gage Keith,1 fumble, 23 passing yards on 2/7 attempts, 13 tackles (2,11), 1 blocked kick Riley Ethridge, 9 rushing yards on 5 carries, 13 receiving yards on 2 receptions, 13 tackles (4,9) Ty Harelson. 8 tackles (3,5).
