Davenport cruises in opener

The Class B Davenport Bulldogs pounded Weleetka 42-18 in their season opener on the road last week and play at home Friday against Wetumka

Ḋavenport Coach John Greenfield said Friday night’s home opener kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.

The veteran coach said despite four turnovers, three interceptions and a fumble, “We played pretty well.”

He commented that two of the three picks were off of deflections and the fumble came following a pass reception.

“They couldn’t stop our running game,” he said of the Outlaws’ defense.

“We took control in the second half. They couldn’t stop us. We played good defense,” he thinks.

The Outlaws scored only three TD’s on Davenport.

“One of those came in the final minute or so,” Greenfield said. “We have some things to shore up to get ready for Wetumka Friday night.

“We need to tighten up our ends a little bit and offensively we need to run our routes and not get as close to one another. Space them out a little better.

“We’re healthy. We have a couple of shoulder dings. One player is still waiting on an MRI and the other should be back for Friday night’s game.”

Greenfield said he’s not sure about Wetumka. “They have a couple of kids who can run and they also have pretty good size on the line.”

Reflecting a little more on last Friday’s night’s win, he acknowledged, “Weleetka was a little better than I thought. They were doing things fundamentally right,” he stated.

Greenfield mentioned, “We have a sophomore quarterback. His first time to start was last Friday night. He needs a few more reps and he’ll be fine.”

Asked about his team’s pre-season ranking, Greenfield said, “We were fourth in one poll, fifth in another.

“So we were ranked in the top five.

“We ought to be good. We only lost three seniors but two of those were out most of the season with injuries.”
