Davenport falls to Pioneer

For only the second time in 19 years, the Davenport Bulldogs haven’t made it beyond the first round of the high school football playoffs.

They dropped a 40-6 contest at the hands of the Pioneer Mustangs in a road matchup.

The Bulldogs end the season with an overall mark of 6-5.

Head Coach John Greenfield pointed to the fact, “This is only the second time we haven’t gotten out of the first round with a win. The other time was in 2005.”

The veteran coach noted, “This has been a real enjoyable bunch to coach. It’s been a satisfying year,” Greenfield believes.

“We had too many errors,” he said of last Friday night’s game at Pioneer. “They were huge. Their tailback was hard to get a hold of, he was fast and strong and he breaks tackles,” Greenfield said.

“We were within six points at 12-6 and headed to score when we dropped a pitch out on the option play. We turned it over too much,” he thinks.

He pointed out, “We didn’t help out our defense any with some of the turnovers.

“The better team won. But our kids gave a lot better effort than the final score indicated,” he said.

The Bulldogs will lose seven seniors to graduation.
