The Davenport Bulldogs, 2-2 in the district after suffering a 48-22 home loss to Wetumka, will wrap up the regular season Thursday night in a road game at Depew.
Coach John Greenfield said kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs stand 5-4 overall on the season.
“They kind of consider us their rivals,” the coach said. “They got beat last week by Summit Christian. They’ll put up a fight. It’s their senior night and they’re fighting for a playoff spot,” he noted.
Greenfield figures from the forecast the game may be played in rain, possibly even in heavy rain.
Greenfield said against Wetumka, “We played them pretty tough. We pulled within six points of them late in the third quarter, then got a penalty and had to kick off from our 25 yard line.
“We kicked it out of bounds, so we had to kick off from the 20 yard line and it kind of went downhill from there,” he noted.
“Can’t play a whole game against quality people,” he said, lamenting the loss.
“We moved the ball pretty well against them. Just weren’t able to sustain it in the fourth quarter,” said Greenfield.
He pointed out that Weleetka and Wetumka, the two teams who have defeated the Bulldogs in successive weeks, will battle it out Friday night for the district championship at Weleetka.
“Should be a good game,” he said.
Looking at Depew, Greenfield said, “We’re still beat up. Have one out for the season and another playing with a cast on. But we escaped further injuries against Wetumka,” he
