It’s homecoming this week as the Davenport Bulldogs host Foyil for the district opener after they walloped Yale 52-6 at Bulldog Stadium last week to run their season record to a perfect 5-0.
It was Davenport’s final non-district contest.
Davenport Coach John Greenfield said kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Bulldog Stadium and that homecoming festivities are at 6:45 prior to the game.
Greenfield, commenting on the win over Yale, said, “We had our way offensively and defensively with them. They got some yards on our reserves in the second half,” he added.
The Bulldogs led 38-0 at halftime. Yale finally managed to get in the scoring column with a single TD at the 9:47 mark in the third period.
“Chance (Acord) was on the other night. He really throws a good ball,” Greenfield said of his sophomore quarterback.
“We played really well offensively and defensively except for the one touchdown,” he said.
The coach believes, “We’re playing really good ball.”
Davenport running back Cole Yancey rushed for 102 yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown.
Acord completed 9 of 10 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns.
Parker Mitchell carried the pigskin seven times for 70 yards, had two rushing touchdowns and caught a pass for another six-pointer.
Griffin Melson gained 42 yards on three carries with a score and had 115 receiving yards, also catching a pass for a TD.
Colten Vanfossen ran for 18 yards on three carries. Greenfield said Vanfossen suffered a gashed hand, but nothing was broken. He’s unsure if he will play Friday night, the coach noted.
Bulldog receiver Casey Harelson caught three passes for 33 yards.
As a team, Davenport ran for 226 yards and had 230 yards through the air.
The Bulldogs limited Yale to 113 rushing yards and only allowed 12 yards through the airways, while intercepting the visitors twice.
