The Davenport Bulldogs suffered a stinging setback last Friday night in their season opener on the road, losing to Oklahoma Bible Academy 46-0.
Veteran Davenport Coach John Greenfield said this week, “Oklahoma Bible is solid, they’re pretty good. We didn’t play very well either,” he noted.
The Bulldogs have an open date this Friday night and then travel to Tulsa on Sep. 9, to take on Regent Prep.
They have their home opener on Friday evening, Sep. 16, when they host Yale.
Greenfield explained, “Our quarterback, Gage Keith, a senior, is a converted wide receiver. He hadn’t played quarterback since he was in the sixth grade. He played pretty well,” the coach thinks.
“He did a good job considering the amount of time he’s had to get ready,” Greenfield believes.
The coach commented, “We didn’t put up much resistance. We never really stopped them. We had some typical mistakes from inexperience, we missed some blocks or went the wrong direction.”
Greenfield said he has four or five seniors, but he lost eight or nine from last year’s team that went 12-1 and didn’t lose a game until the quarterfinal loss to Balko, due to graduation.
Oklahoma Bible Academy, playing before its home crowd, had the Bulldogs down 38-0 at intermission.
“They scored a touchdown on their first series of the second half, converted the extra points and it was over,” Greenfield said.
“We have two weeks to get ready for Regent Prep,” he said.
