Evan Gwin, a 2021 senior at Chandler High school, made the All-State Golf team.
The game is at the Cherokee Golf Club in Catoosa, Oklahoma on July 26 according to the Oklahoma Coaches Association. He began playing golf in the eighth grade, while he was attending Community Christian School.
While golf is his main priority he also ran Cross Country in high school. He and his family moved to Chandler 2 years ago, but he did not transfer to Chandler High School until the pandemic made in-person learning unsafe.
Instead of commuting an hour to his previous high school, he transferred and focused on his golf game.
He also had more options for taking concurrent classes at Chandler, which was another aspect of appeal.
He plays at the Chandler golf course, and if it is closed he plays at the Stroud course.
He will be attending Southern Nazarene University in the fall, and he was awarded a golf scholarship as well as an academic scholarship.
He is planning on pursuing a major in finance, according to his mother Shannon Gwin.
“He likes the competition side to it and he loves tournaments, but it’s something about being out on the course,” said his mother.
Even though he is now graduated, Gwin is still practicing almost daily with the All State game quickly approaching.
“He’s excited about coming together and doing a tournament. The game of golf is a sport where you can play yourself, and so you’re playing against yourself.
“He strives to get his personal best everytime. It really just relies on how you are individually and you can’t point to anyone but yourself.
“He loves being out there playing with other golfers having that camaraderie,” said his mother.
Gwin is currently at a golf camp at Oklahoma State University.
