1. Update on Asphalt Overlay on Highway 18
A. ODOT has completed their initial base overlayment from Hwy. 62 to Hwy 66. They are spraying Bitumen, which is a binder that will hold the asphalt in place and together. Another 2” overlay will top the surface out. The pneumatic roller and steel roller really puts a smooth finish on it. More shoulder work is to be done.
2. Update on Chamber of Commerce
A. Josh Sims, President of the Chamber of Commerce, called me and confirmed the August 21st date for the fireworks display at Meeker Lake. Event starts at 7 pm with singing, turtle races, kiddie rides, vendors, food trucks, fun and games. Fireworks will be shot off 9 PMish or dark thirty. Free ice cream, hot dogs and water again, this year. Don’t miss out! Thanks to all the people and organizations that helps this celebration every year.
B. Although this celebration this year will be held in August instead of July 4th, we can still remember the original meaning. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress, July 4, 1776.
The Congress had voted in favor of Independence from Great Britain on July 2nd but didn’t complete the process of revising the Declaration of Independence, originally drafted by Thomas Jefferson in consultation with fellow Committee members: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and William Livingston until 2 days later.
The celebration was initially modeled on that of the King’s Birthday which had been marked annually by bell ringing, bonfires, solemn processions and oratory. Come join in on this year’s fun with friends and family. Continue to thank our former and current service men and women for all that they have done for all of us, here in the good ole U.S.A.
