Following a 41-6 district setback to Perkins last week, the McLoud Redskins’ focus this week is on Bridge Creek who will they square off against in a road contest Friday night.
McLoud Coach Rusty Hall said kickoff is at 7 p.m.
The Redskins are now 1-7 overall and 0-5 in district competition.
Hall said of Perkins, “They’re pretty good. They’ll finish second in the district,” he noted.
The coach said his Redskins played pretty well the opening quarter, trailing Perkins 6-0 headed into the second period. “They scored to make it 12-0 and then we scored right after that.
“Wide receiver Coby Cardin caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kaden Carl to make it 12-6,” he said. The extra point attempt was blocked.
“After that, they scored two more times to make it 28-6 at halftime,” Hall related.
McLoud gave up touchdowns in each of the third and fourth quarters. “We were never able to score after that. We couldn’t move the ball very well. We’d get a couple of first downs here and there, but we kept stalling out at midfield,” the coach said.
Hall commented, “Defensively we played okay. The same corner got beat on two early touchdown passes.”
“We also fumbled a kickoff and that gave them a short field and they scored on that. We didn’t play just terrible, but some of it was special teams and offensive blunders,” he thinks.
Of this week’s opponent Bridge Creek Hall stated, “This is a game we have a chance to win. They play hard, they just don’t have the talent and they’re not as athletic as some of the other teams we’ve played.”
Junior star running back Clint Campbell, who hasn’t played a down this year, won’t play at all this season, Hall confirmed. Campbell suffered a broken arm during a preseason scrimmage and has been out since.
Still, Hall says Campbell’s ranking in the 2023 class has improved. “He’s now ranked No. 37 overall in Oklahoma and he’s the No. 3 athlete by position even though he hasn’t played a down all year,” Hall pointed out.
