Davenport manhandles Yale

The Davenport Bulldogs put together nearly 300 yards of offense and shut out Yale last Friday night 48-0 in the first round of the Class B playoffs.

With the win, the Bulldogs advance to the second round and will host Keota Friday evening at Bulldog Stadium. Coach John Greenfield said kickoff is at 7 p.m. and not 7:30.

Davenport is 11-0 on the season.

“We ran the ball well and played good defense,” the coach said.

Greenfield noted, “We took it right down the field and scored after halftime, then picked off a pass and scored and that ended the game.”

Gage Keith returned the intercepted aerial 26 yards for the touchdown.

“We held out Griffin Melson and Parker Mitchell. They didn’t play a down. They were nursing injuries, nothing major, but we wanted to let them just rest,” Greenfield added.

He said both will play Friday night against Keota. Sophomore quarterback Chance Acord completed 5

Sophomore quarterback Chance Acord completed 5 of 10 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown and he also ran for 19 yards and scored a TD.

Leading the ground attack was Cole Yancey, carrying the pigskin eight times for 121 yards, including three touchdowns.

Colten VanFossen carried the ball six times and rushed for 91 yards and a TD.

Casey Harelson caught three passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Greenfield noted, “Chance ran the ball more than usual with those two players out.”

It was the second time this season Davenport had defeated Yale. The Bulldogs played them in week 5 of the season, winning that contest 52-6. “They improved from the first time we played them earlier in the season,” Greenfield thinks.

About the upcoming clash against Keota, Greenfield said, “They’re pretty good. They can beat you if you don’t play. You can’t let them hang around,” he believes.

He said Keota will feature their quarterback. “He runs pretty well, he’s not real big, but he’s quick,” he said.
