The Meeker Board of Education Monday night agreed to add a Middle School slow-pitch softball program beginning in the Spring.
School Supt. Jeff Pruitt told the board members, “the kids are interested.”
Brad Seaborn, the school’s athletic director, advised the board members, “The kids have the option to run track if they want. Originally, 13 kids had said they wanted to play slow-pitch softball. Now we have 19 who say they want to play,” he noted.
He explained, “This will give them a taste of it as they head into high school.”
Seaborn said since it was a little late getting it started, he has managed to schedule 9 or 10 regular season games and one tournament.
He said the program would be implemented this spring.
The board approved purchasing a school vehicle on state bid. Pruitt said it would be either a Suburban or Ford Expedition.
He advised the board funds from the school bond issue approved earlier this year would be used to purchase the vehicle.
Board members accepted resignation requests from Veronica Nelson, Elementary School Aide and Laney Manning, Middle School Aide.
In the public comments portion of the meeting, a school patron told the board that improvements need to be made to the football field. He pointed to the basketball and baseball programs having improved facilities.
“I’m doing this for the Little League and football programs,” he advised them.
High School Principal Brad Buxton related to board members some of the activities going on including those in early January after students return from the Christmas break. He said the FFA Swine Jackpot Show is Jan. 8 and moving to the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.
Virginia Pritchard, Meeker Education Center/Alt. Ed Principal said, “There are 91 students in K-12 that are taking advantage of the virtual and blended learning opportunities.
Seven are about to graduate early,” she added.
