A last minute change in the schedule last weekend due to the weather put two No. 1 teams in different classes squaring off against one another.
The Dale Pirates, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, defeated Roff, ranked No. 1 in Class B, 34-27 in a contest played at Vanoss.
Dale originally had been scheduled to host Adair on Saturday afternoon, but the winter storm caused them to play Roff at a neutral location.
Dale Coach Jeff Edmonson, whose Pirates are now 20-1 on the season, said, “We played good defense and we played hard. Roff has a good ball club, good size, and that’s why they are No. 1 in Class B,” the coach added.
He noted, “We didn’t shoot the ball real well. We were 1-6 from three point range in one half and 2-11 in the other.” Sophomore Deken Jones was 8 of 9 from the free throw line, 4 of 4 in the final quarter, Edmonson said.
He led the Pirates in scoring with 15 points.
“We got up by 11 or 12 points a couple of times, but just couldn’t quite get above that. They play a zone defense,” Edmonson commented.
“We start three freshmen and two sophomores,” Edmondson pointed out.
Dale was hosting Vanoss for senior night on Tuesday, then the Pirates travel to Latta Friday night and are on the road against Cashion next Monday night.
Dale will host the district either Feb. 18 or 19 and then the regional playoffs, Edmonson said.
