Veteran banners will be going up on Main Street this month and remain until November. They are still available for purchase. The cost is $125 for one side of a banner. If you would like to honor a veteran, please contact me at 918-527-9833. Veterans do not have to be Stroud residents or graduates.
My mom received a nice condolence note from Cathy Carpenter Reese. Cathy is the daughter of the late Peggy Carpenter and Jack Carpenter. She graduated from Stroud in 1972 and currently resides in Minnesota.
In her note to mom, she reminisced about Gary and her brother, Ken Carpenter, when they played together as little boys. My mother and Cathy’s went to Stroud High School together, so our families had known each other since before we kids were born.
I was in Carpenter Insurance office the other day and I, too, had to reminisce with Ken about our by-gone days. My biggest memory of Ken and Gary was when Gary celebrated his birthday in Oklahoma City at the Foreman Scotty show. One of the two special highlights of the show was a wooden horse made from lumber, a barrel, and a saddle for kids to sit on.
The horse’s name was, of course, “Woody”. This special treat was reserved for kids who were having a birthday and they were given “golden horseshoes.”
The other special treat was during the show all the kids were asked to shout out the magic words, Nixo-Villy! A “Magic Lasso” would appear and the camera would randomly zigzag over the kids and finally settle on the face of one of them.
That kid would win a special treat. I’m sure many of you remember the Foreman Scotty Show and the Tulsa show, Mr. Zing and Tuffy. If you have any fond memories of either of these two shows, please e-mail them to me at okiesteakhouse@yahoo.com.
I took down the tattered American flag last week at our cemetery. I put it in the flag drop box that sits outside the Stroud Police Station.
Former State Senator Jason Smalley donated the box. As I was placing the flag in the box, I noticed that it was almost full. I was glad to see that the community is using it to discard their worn flags. The American Legion will hold a flag burning ceremony sometime this fall to properly dispose of them.
Town Talk would like to wish one of our most dedicated volunteers, David Evans, a happy birthday. David will be celebrating on Friday, April 15th. If you see David, please wish him a happy birthday and thank him for all the volunteer hours he donates to Stroud projects.
Activities this week include City Council meeting on Thursday, April 14th at 6 p.m. at City Hall and Stroud Clothing Ministry will be open on Thursday, also. Easter is this Sunday so make plans to attend services at one of the many churches in our community. There will be no school on Friday, April 15th.
Work continues on the mini golf course which is still scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend. It is going to be familyfriendly and a wonderful place to entertain your kids this summer. The course is named Putt Putt Kicks on Route 66. Our sign should be up soon.
Be sure to pick up those last-minute Easter basket gifts at any local merchant. You just have a few days left before the Easter bunny starts his deliveries. Easter is a fun time for kids but don’t forget to share with them the wonderful reason we celebrate – He is risen! Have a great week and thank you for choosing to shop local…………first!
