The Chandler Planning Commission has voted not to recommend rezoning property for a sports center.
City Manager Jason Orr indicated Tuesday he’s not sure the property owner wants to pursue it any further.
The Planning Commission conducted a public hearing June 30 on the proposed rezoning of 13.64 acres located at Rozell and Park Streets next to Tilghman Park. The current zoning classification is R-1, single family, and the zoning sought was C-2, commercial for a sports facility.
He said the hearing would provide an opportunity for the public to express their support or opposition to the proposed rezoning.
This would allow the commission to determine if the public, the commission itself and the City Council are going to be supportive, Orr said.
Orr said last week whatever the commission decided during the meeting would be forwarded to the City Council.
“The Planning Commission just makes a recommendation to the Council,” he said.
He indicated the recommendation normally would go to the Council at its next meeting, July 12, but that’s not necessarily the case.
He said the property owner has looked at several different possibilities in the past and that he’s owned the property for 21 years.
